Measle's Animal Haven Adoption Process

Thank you for choosing to adopt a homeless pit bull! Every time one dog is adopted from Measle's Animal Haven, it allows us to save the life of another.

The first step in our adoption process is for you to submit an adoption application by filling out our online form - Adoption Application and send it back to us (via E-mail,  fax, or U.S. Mail). Please be honest in your answers so we can ensure that the adoption is a great fit for both the animal AND for your family.

Once your application is reviewed and approved, we will set up a home visit, to give us a chance to bring the animal you are interested in to your house. This will give you and the dog/cat a chance to interact in your environment, and also allow the dog/cat to interact with the rest of your family and any other pets.

Finally, we will ask you to sign an adoption contract, in which you agree that you will properly care for and love your new pet. You also agree to follow any state and municipal laws that apply to your new pet. And, if you ever need to give up your adopted dog, you will return him/her to Measle's Animal Haven. We don't want to see any of our babies in a kill shelter ever again--we want them to be safe and happy for life.

Our adoption fees vary, depending on the age of the animal and other factors. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and the adoption fees are used to help defray vet expenses for the rescued animals.

Adopting a Friend

We only adopt our rescued animals to loving indoor homes with people who are willing to treat the animal as a family member and commit to the animal for the rest of his/her life. A completed application, adoption fee, home visit(s), references, and adoption contract are required for adoption.

Adopting a Pit Bull From Us

Measle's Animal Haven is dedicated to rescuing Pit Bulls. It is our goal to to restore the reputations of the Pit Bull breed, educate the public and potential adoptive families, and reduce the numbers of unwanted, euthanized animals by adopting out well-rounded Bully ambassadors. We will not accept a dog of any breed that is aggressive toward humans. Due to the Pit Bull's tendency to be same-sex dog aggressive, we prefer to adopt Pit Bulls into a home where he/she is the only dog, though we will consider adopting a dog-friendly Pit Bull into a home with a compatible spayed/neutered dog of the opposite sex.

An adoption application, references, home visits, adoption fee, and adoption contract are required for adoption. This is to ensure that the dogs are placed in homes that are suitable for their breed requirements, temperaments, personalities, and individual needs, and to be sure that potential adoptive families are serious about adopting. This also ensures that you have the best interest of the dog at heart, and the dog will be adopted as a permanent member of the family. Our organization only adopts to indoor homes: chains, runners, kennels, pens, fences, etc. are not acceptable "homes" for our animals. Dogs, especially pit bulls, need constant human interaction and companionship, which can only be received by living indoors as a member of the family.

We only adopt Pit Bulls to individuals/families who are at least 25 years old and own their own homes. We will not adopt to any municipality where Pit Bulls are illegal. Further, you must agree to comply with any state and/or municipality requirements with regard to ownership of the Pit Bull.

Adopting a Senior Dog From Us

Many people automatically think of a puppy when they decide to adopt an animal companion. Of course puppies are warm and cuddly, and everyone wants to hold and pet them. But, they demand patience and energy to help them become wonderful family members and companions. Older dogs, however, can be as cute and lovable as puppies, and they come to you housebroken, calm, often already obedience trained (already knowing that furniture is not to be chewed on or scratched up), and with their personalities fully developed.

Many people hesitate to adopt a senior dog because they fear that their time with their new best friend will be short, bringing that painful time of loss closer. But the privilege of loving a senior dog makes every single day special, as you and your companion share love, friendship, and a special relationship that grows stronger with the knowledge that you have given this fine old dog a second chance at life. The love that grows from this knowledge is stronger than the pain of eventual separation.

Senior animals are often the first to be killed in shelters and pounds. Overlooked in favor of puppies, they often do not have a chance and must die to free up space for more puppies who are constantly being born because irresponsible owners do not spay/neuter their pets. How tragic that these animals have given a family the years of love and then are abandoned to die (sometimes suffocating horribly in gas chambers), alone and afraid, not understanding why they have been discarded by the people they love.

Senior animals make excellent companions for everyone--especially senior people--and they make great companions for the dogs/cats you already have. An older dog can really help calm down a younger one, and help train them to behave properly faster than a human can. Additionally, puppies are often not good companions for small children (either the puppy is inadvertently hurt by a child too young to know better, or the puppy inadvertently nips/scratches the child because they don't know any better either). But, older animals are often wonderful with children (though parents should always responsibly supervise all animal-child interactions with animals of any age).

When you adopt a senior animal, you gain a faithful companion and save a life. Senior dogs generally fit into your household with ease--they find the softest, warmest spot in the house and claim it for their own, but they will share with you, too. Please consider adopting a senior dog today!!

Insurance companies may their rates on breed, weight, age, gender and bite history. Proof of obedience training or other specialized training is also helpful because it demonstrates the responsibility of the owner.

Alternatively, if you have homeowner insurance or renters insurance, and it does not cover canine inflicted injures, talk to your insurance agent about purchasing a "personal umbrella liability policy." It is form of umbrella liability insurance for individuals and their families. It provides coverage for (1) excess liability over underlying liability coverage (homeowners, auto) and (2) some of the liability exposures excluded by underlying policies, which might include canine liability (but be sure to check!). There is no standard form for this kind of policy, but generally the form requires the maintenance of underlying homeowners and auto liability policies with minimum combined single liability limits of $300,000 each. The important thing is to ascertain that the umbrella policy under consideration does not exclude canine inflicted injuries
