Measle's Animal Haven

Our PIT FIX 2010 Program

We LOVE Pit Bulls but there are already too many unwanted and stray Pit Bulls dying every day just because of their breed!! For this reason, Measle’s Animal Haven (MAH) offers low-cost spay or neuter surgeries for pit bulls and pit bull mixes (all dogs identified as “pit bull type dogs” under Ohio Revised Code) owned by residents of Central Ohio counties (Franklin, Delaware, Madison, Union, Licking, Pickaway, and Fairfield). Each year the pit bull population continues to grow, leaving more and more of these animals to be abandoned, abused/neglected, or killed under Ohio’s breed-specific legislation, without ever knowing the warmth of a home or the love of a family.

Please be a responsible owner!! If your dog is “fixed,” you will never have to worry about him/her having puppies, running away to chase a dog in heat, or getting cancer of the reproductive organs.

We will “fix” (spay/neuter) your pit bull(s) for $20 each (total cost to owner with rabies shot included) if you have proof that you live in one of the abovementioned Central Ohio counties (a current Driver's License or Ohio ID with a Central Ohio county address on it is acceptable) and meet ONE the following income criteria:

  • Tax return showing owner’s family income does not exceed 150% of the federal poverty guideline
  • Section 8 housing voucher
  • Schedule letter from Ohio Works First
  • Ohio Medicaid card
  • Letter from Veteran Benefits Administration acknowledging service-related disability
  • Ohio Direction Card (for food stamps)
  • WIC card (Women Infants and Children nutrition program)
  • Benefit letter documenting Supplemental Security Income
  • Benefit letter documenting assistance from Social Security Disability
  • Certificate of adoption showing that the animal was adopted from a licensed animal shelter or pound
  • Certificate of adoption showing that the animal was adopted from a nonprofit corporation

(also insure dogs with a "bite history")

Insurance companies may their rates on breed, weight, age, gender and bite history. Proof of obedience training or other specialized training is also helpful because it demonstrates the responsibility of the owner.

Alternatively, if you have homeowner insurance or renters insurance, and it does not cover canine inflicted injures, talk to your insurance agent about purchasing a "personal umbrella liability policy." It is form of umbrella liability insurance for individuals and their families. It provides coverage for (1) excess liability over underlying liability coverage (homeowners, auto) and (2) some of the liability exposures excluded by underlying policies, which might include canine liability (but be sure to check!). There is no standard form for this kind of policy, but generally the form requires the maintenance of underlying homeowners and auto liability policies with minimum combined single liability limits of $300,000 each. The important thing is to ascertain that the umbrella policy under consideration does not exclude canine inflicted injuries
